The interim Super Eagles head coach, Austine Eguavoen has not ruled out of the possibility of taking up the role permanently.
Eguavoen was placed temporarily in charge of the team following the sacking of Franco-German tactician Gernot Rohr on the eve of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro is expected to take charge of the Super Eagles after the 2021 AFCON finals in Cameroon.
The former Nigerian international has however put himself in a good position to get the role permanently following the Super Eagles impressive start at the ongoing AFCON.
Asked at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference if he would be interested in taking the role permanently.
“If they gave me the job, why not?” the former defender replied.
“These questions have come many, many times, but I’m very happy with the position I occupy with the Nigeria Football Federation.
“Yes, if they asked me for it, yes maybe, just maybe and when we get to that river, we will cross it.”
Nigeria’s smooth start to the competition has been in contrast to their tumultuous build-up which saw Gernot Rohr sacked and Eguavoen named as caretaker.
However, NFF president Amaju Pinnick has hinted that Eguavoen could keep the job should he lead the Nigeria National men football team to glory in Cameroon.
Amaju said following his appointment, “We know that Eguavoen can do the job expertly, but we also know that he will be more useful controlling the technical department”.
“If Eguavoen win the Cup of Nations, we might have a rethink. In that case, the foreign coach would become the technical director,” the NFF boss said.
